Sea lion 'stronghold' Jones Island off South Australia now 'prohibited' to protect endangered species
All over Australia, there are islands and plots of land kept under safe guard due to their environmental importance.
Each state has a different name for them, in South Australia and Western Australia, they're called 'prohibited areas', in Queensland, 'restricted areas', and in Victoria, they're called 'reference areas'.
They all vary in terms of the access they provide, the size, and how they are introduced, but they're all enforced for the same reason: to protect important parts of the environment.
South Australia's Jones Island was recently declared a prohibited area due to it being an important breeding ground for the endangered Australian sea lion.
The island is part of the Baird Bay Islands Conservation Park, south of Streaky Bay.
Rangers patrolling the conservation park will now issue fines to anyone found visiting Jones Island.
